Sweet Emery

I know, it's early to get this posted already. Since I lack the ability to write down what my children are doing so I'll remember in the future, I've decided to post something each day that my brain is functioning about what they did that day that I'll want to remember.

This pic is from last night, but it pretty much sums up our days. :)

Lesson 1: Underwear is optional. Princess heels are not. Yes. This truly is a common sight around here. Why she would feel high heels, which she wears ALL DAY LONG, are more important than Dora panties, is beyond me. We'll get there, Sis.

This post is actually going to extend beyond last night. I feel the need to recap my awesome morning yesterday with Emery, since the last post was all about being sick. Poo.

I got the privilege of going to Emery's Mother's Day Tea Party at preschool with her yesterday. Thankfully, we both felt better and were able to take our pink strawberry cake to the party.

I loved seeing her interact with her friends and teachers at school and she loved showing me EVERYTHING she did and knew.
"My mom is the best to me because: she is" -- that's Emery!

"This is my friend, Elizabeth. This is my friend Michael."

"Mom, do you want to see me slide? Do you want to see me climb the ladder? Look, I'm on this step. Look, Mom, I'm on this step now."

"Mom, look here is the grass I sit in."

Emery with her picture she made and the now defunct tulip

It was priceless. I got to watch her in Circle Time (story/singing time), Music Time (instruments and songs with the Music teacher), eat our snacks, read her paper about me and she gave me a beautiful hand-printed bouquet of flowers picture she made and a pink tulip which she swung like a lasso before giving me, so now it is dead. :)

Attentively listening during Circle Time to her favorite book

She melted my heart at bedtime by telling me, "Thanks Mom." I said, you're welcome, what did I do?

"For coming to my tea party at school. I had a lot (pronounced yacht) of fun with you today."

Now, I'm off to end the Spanish version of Elmo she's watching on Youtube at full volume and get us all dressed for our glorious 90+ day!

Gotta love germs!

So this week has decidedly been a, hmm, how to put this delicately, week from hell, at the Schlabach household. Since Cohen has the immune system of a flea, (I imagine they have poor ones), he catches everything that's going around. Unfortunately for the rest of us, he was thoughtful and shared. :(

After a fussy baby last week and a sleepless night of screaming Friday, we took him to the doctor on Saturday afraid of his second ear infection in three weeks. Luckily, it was not his ears. Unluckily, it was hand, foot, mouth disease. The terrible virus that spreads from child to child leaving a week-long recovery in its wake.

Emery had this as a baby and it was pretty miserable. Symptoms include high fevers for several days, skin rashes all over body and sores in throat and mouth. Sound bad? Trust me, it is. The jury is still out if I have it for sure or not. Since it is NOT common in adults, of course, I would mimic their symptoms the SAME time both of them have this. Boo.
Poor baby has the rash in her mouth!

We thought we were in the clear when his symptoms nearly went away and no one else was sick. But alas, on Sunday night Emery had a high fever and the rash began. You can check out some pictures of it, but they don't do it justice. She really looks like someone took a tiny red marker and put dots all over her body. It's puffy and itchy in annoying places for her like her underwear line, elbows and feet, but she's a trooper and really doesn't complain about it unless she has a fever and then she wants to cuddle and watch Dora. Thank goodness for DVR. I think the three of us cuddled on the couch all day Monday watching recorded Dora episodes.

Monday, I came down with the swollen throat and high fever. I've decided there is nothing worse than having to try to comfort two sick babies when all you want is someone to comfort you.

We seem to be almost in the clear now. With fevers gone, we're out of the contagion zone and ready to begin Chlorox-ing the house tomorrow!

As a side note, isn't he the cutest, serious squash eater?

Welcome to our crazy life

And... almost two years later, we are back online! Ha. What a joke this is. As much as I love to write, one would think I could keep up a blog. But alas, life intervenes and it isn't meant to be. Maybe we can keep this a little more regular.

I’m not even going to attempt to summarize the last two years of our life, as so much as changed and I’m sure it would be incomplete, as my memory isn’t what it used to be….just ask my parents! We’ll just start with the most recent events.

EMERY
Emery - 2 years, 9 months old
This sweet girl simultaneously makes me want to pull my hair out and makes my heart swell with her sweet, kind spirit. It’s amazing to me how much of a strong personality children have at such an early age. I completely attribute any ornery bone in her body to her father, and trust me, it’s her entire skeleton!

Since she’s not a baby anymore, she doesn’t really have milestones she’s reaching, but this is what she’s into these days, if I can brag a bit:

Princesses:  We are taking her to Disney World this summer with my parents and brother and she CANNOT wait to meet the princesses, namely Snow White, who is her favorite. She has a play castle and dress up clothes that she plays in and wears most of the week, and she turns the rest of us into princes, monsters, horsies… you know, princesses are magical.
-
Puppies: About 90 percent of her stuffed animals are puppies, so we have a lot of puppy action going on in this house.  We also have a lot of puppy action as in she frequently thinks she is a puppy and acts like one, or alternately a puppy princess.
-
Completing puzzles: Emery is so stinking smart. She can do puzzles faster and better than most kids I know her age, not to mention puzzles by herself. Her current favorite is this alphabet train puzzle that she carries around, completes and pushes in her stroller 10x a day.
-
Singing every song she knows: I should clarify. I mean to say, singing any song. She really doesn’t have to know it, because about half of the songs she sings about are made up songs about what she is doing at that moment or songs she knows with alternative words she’s added to the songs, to try to get someone to laugh at her. Did I mention she’s just like her father yet?
-
Reading books: Finally, something I can take credit for! Emery started loving to read at an early age. By 18 months, she was already bringing us books to read from cover to cover. Now, at almost 3, we seriously can sit for an hour or more at a time and read book, after book, after book. This girl loves to read. She loves us to read to her and she loves to read to her Pooh friends and Cohen. Our pathetic library bag had seen better days just since July when we started going to the library weekly for new books, when this month, the head librarian who checks us out, felt sorry for me trying to stuff 30 library books into a tiny bag that she gave me two free ones! Gotta love fellow book nerds.
-
Imagination!! I have always understood that children are super creative. I remember coming up with wild things from time to time or unique scenarios for my Barbies to go through. Nothing I remember or imagined is even on the level of Emery’s imagination. We used to joke that my brother had “Rocko” vision ( a term he came up with himself) that basically meant it, it gave him the creative license for some bizarre things that could happen or that his toys were going to do. It was an often thing, but it came and went and we always knew when his “rocko” vision was surfacing. Emery seems to have this on a much deeper level. It never stops. She has running monologues with herself and to us about what is going on at all times and I usually have no idea where she is getting this stuff from.

On a similar tangent, Emery also has the vocabulary of a 5-year-old, I promise. She talks the entire day long and greatly enriches our home with always verbalizing her thoughts. Here are some humorous ones from this week:

At bedtime last week:
“Momma, the sunshine told me that its morning time. Can I show you the sunshine out your window?”

“Emery, there is no sunshine. It went night night. Look out your window and see, do you see the sunshine?”

“Yes!”

“No, that’s the moon. “

“Okay momma. I think I need to sleep in your bed tonight because the shadows are mad at me (with her mad face).”

“The shadows can’t be mad at you, they are just decorations on your walls at night.”

“Which friend can I take since you got out of bed again?”

“Not Percy! But if you have to take one, take Rudolph.” (So much for taking away friends keeping her in bed!)

Hair styles
“Momma, Can I color my hair red so I look like Ariel? (As she’s holding a red marker)”

Cohen
“Momma, one day when you are done with Cohen, he’s going to go back into your belly!”

The Future
“Momma, one day when I get bigger and bigger like you and have big hands, I’m going to be able to turn on the water myself! And work at the circus.”

“What are you going to do at the circus, Emery?”

“I’m going to ride the nice, beautiful elephants. I will give you a ride too, if you want.”

Cohen
Cohen - 4 months

Meet the newest member of the family: Cohen Matthew. Already 4 ½ months old, he’s not exactly new. This sweet boy already blesses us so much with his sweet smiles, and coos. After a rough first three months of eating, sleeping and pooping issues, we finally have him at a happy place and are truly enjoying the happiest baby ever.

Cohen has recently discovered how to roll over and coo loudly to himself. So instead of napping, we find him talking to himself in the crib and rolling around from side to side. Our pediatrician had us start him on solids at 4 months to see if it would help with his acid reflux and projectile vomiting. After refusing to eat rice cereals, we jumped ahead to squash and he LOVES it. He would eat a whole jar at once if we let him. He starts smacking those little lips and opening his mouth wider and wider with each bite. I’ll have to post our video of him first eating it if I remember.

For those  of you who think that Drew smiles all the time, you should meet Cohen. This kid never stops smiling. Even in the middle of the night when he we wakes up screaming. As soon as you walk in the room, he starts smiling and doesn’t stop. It takes us quite a while to get him finish his bottles sometimes because all he wants to do is smile at us!

I’ll leave you today on this lengthy chapter of our life, with a story of Emery at school today.

When I picked her up from preschool, she told me, Miss Holly (her teacher), told her to go to timeout today. When I couldn’t get much more out of her why, I went and asked her other teacher Miss Barbara if Emery has been in timeout today.

“Miss Barbara, did Emery listen today or did she get a timeout?”

Miss Barbara smiles, “Well, she almost got one today. They were all sitting in their seats at the table when they start putting their fingers in their mouth and making this face. (See the picture below)

“We told them to stop putting their fingers in their mouth, and some stopped, but then Emery started doing it again and wouldn’t listen when we told her to stop. In fact, I think she’s the one that started this whole thing.”

Trying not to laugh aloud, I assured Miss Barbara that I would bet money that Emery was the one that instigated the incident, seeing as how this is her favorite face she and her daddy make.

“When she refused to listen, Miss Holly told her to go to timeout and she told Miss Holly, ‘No, please don’t make me go to timeout.’”

Oh boy. We have some discussion ahead of us about not always having to make people laugh at us for attention. J At least it’s something funny like that and not that she’s a bully. I think I can handle a class clown much easier!

Catch Up!

Oh my. We are far behind on this blogging thing. How does life get so busy so quickly? I guess I better start filling in the gap of the past two months! Not even a week after our last blog post, Emery started crawling. A ridiculous crawl. Here is a video of her first crawling experience. Luckily Drew and I were both home to see it and catch it on video.

Then a week after she started crawling, she got her first tooth. Then...a week later she started walking. Forget this crawling business. Walking is for big girls! How is it possible for my baby to have grown up in two weeks!

Now she is ALWAYS on the move. She doesn't want to do anything but walk. Which makes it easier in some respects..and much harder to find her in others! Now that she can walk, she has found new loves of things such as: opening all the cabinets. Thank you for child proof locks...if only I could remember they were there! She loves the toilet paper in the bathroom, dropping everything including Daddy's shoes and the baby monitor into the bathtub, playing with her night light, opening the trash can, licking the TV, playing peek a boo behind my chair, pulling the clock off my night stand, eating Gus' dog food...and I could go on for hours!

She is as rotten as they come (except maybe Carter Hignight -- her betrothed boyfriend :)) and quite the little drama queen. It's amazing to watch her personality develop. We've taught her "tricks" such as to make a mean face, act surprised, beat her chest like Tarzan and go ah-ah-ah-ah, blow kisses and most recently dance. Let's just pray she doesn't inherit moves from Drew or I!

I can't believe that in less than a month we will be celebrating her first birthday! What a year.

Drew officially has less than a year left of physical therapy school...for which we are VERY glad and excited. I have a feeling this year will fly by for him and before we know it, we'll be off on an entirely new adventure.

Nothing new is happening on my end of things in life. I'm so thankful its just about summertime and that all of the things I love most are about to begin: warm days and evenings, campfires, fresh garden produce, fireflies, beach vacations, tanning and a generally happier outlook on life. How can you not be happy when its the middle of spring/beginning of summer?

Here's a recap on Emery's latest happenings the past two months:
- At 9 1/2 months: You started crawling with a crazy hitch in your right leg. It didn't last long before you figured out how to move...although not very quickly....hence the reason
- At 10 months: that you figured out how to walk. You also had your first two bottom teeth come in and now you are into everything and eating everything! You now walk around your crib in circles during nap time when you don't want to go to bed.
- At 10 1/2 months: You've figured out what it means to be chased and love to run. Your run usually consists of walk, walk, face plant, crawl, laugh, crawl, stand up, walk, walk, face plant...but nonetheless. You are figuring it out and getting pretty quick! You are also obsessed with taking your Pooh Bear and soft fleece blankets everywhere you go...dragging the blanket between your legs and Pooh Bear tucked under your arm. You also are now thinking about sharing your binkie with others..although you steal it right back and pop it in your mouth. You are also amazing at sneezing, laughing and coughing, all while keeping that thing in your mouth!
- At 11 months: You constantly walk and jibber jabber to yourself. You will consistently shake your head no when we say no, no and the best thing to keep you out of something is to say: Leave It. Whoops...it's hard to break a habit after you've trained two dogs! :) You can wear your hair back in rubber bands now, eat like there is no tomorrow and love giving kisses if we ask for them. You love to read books all the time and can sit still long enough for only a few favorites. You love going to the park, swinging on swings and anything to do with water!

My first mother's day was so wonderful surrounded by my precious baby and family! I hope everyone else had a wonderful day as well!

Emery and the big, bad bronchitis!

Emery is sick again. I can't even count the number of colds this poor child has had in her short 9 months. Thankfully she is an uber-happy child, even when sick. Until her ears start hurting, it's hard to tell she's sick because she still sits and sings and plays and giggles. When those ears start hurting though, watch out. She throws her toys, cries and whines, actually snuggles! and pulls her hair out. Thank goodness for antibiotics. I know earaches hurt as an adult. I can't imagine having both ears hurting.

We went in for her nine-month appointment yesterday, which couldn't have come sooner since shes' been sick over a week with coughing. After an extremely long wait, they quickly told me she has bronchitis and a double ear infection. She now has to take a nasty thick antibiotic, and use an inhaler with a mask for the bronchitis. She was really chill and actually liked the mask at the doctor's office when they demonstrated how to do it on her. Getting her home and attempting it is an entirely different story though! She rips it off her face and shakes her head as fast as she can. This could be an interesting time. By the way, she's 19 lbs 6 ounces and 27.5 inches long. She's finally slimming down and dropped from the 90th percentile to a more normal 60-70 percentile. Have no fear though, her precious rolls and cankles are sticking around for the long haul.

Besides her sickness though, it has been a big few weeks for us!

We got a Ford Edge a few weeks ago and traded by blue hot rod Honda Civic. I thought I would be sadder getting rid of my college car, but it really wasn't hard at all upgrading to a sleek, sexier, I might add, mini-suv. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE all of the space we have now. It is so much easier getting her into her car seat, when I don't have to squeeze behind the passenger side door and wedge myself between the car seat and the door to put her in, all the while banging her head on my roof! Not to mention the large trunk space for Gus to ride in. Now we can all ride in style, and boy is Gus loving it. The car came with rubber floor mats, which we've already decided is a Godsend. I can't think of a better invention for a vehicle with children and dogs at this point. Who knew getting a new vehicle could be so fun?

Emery has also been attempting more finger foods such as strawberries and American cheese. She loves the flavors, but cannot understand to pick the pieces up and put them in her mouth. Put a piece of carpet fuzz in front of her though, and man, she swallows it faster than you can say boo. Gus has been very helpful in cleaning up her mashed American cheese chunks that she throws on the floor.

She also has figured out how to walk all over the place holding your hand. Forget the rolling over and crawling business. I swear she's going to skip straight to walking. We now spend our days exploring the house and hanging out by the glass door watching and singing to Gus.

Drew has started his second clinical in Dover this week. He loves working with the patients, but not the 5 a.m. wake up time! His schooling is flying by. Only one year left until we're off to who knows where. I can't wait for the bigger, better things in life waiting for us.

Hopefully in the upcoming months I'll be writing about how fantastic my workouts are going and how amazing I'm looking. I made a deal with Drew that if we reach our goal weight (yes, we still have to lose the post-pregnancy laziness and sympathy weight) by Emery's birthday, that two things will happen: I will buy Drew his expensive shoes he wants and he will get me my stretch mark ridding cream and a bikini. I swore I'd never get to wear one again after the Emery explosion that occurred on my skin, but we'll see. If Mederma's new stretch mark scar treatment works and I actually lose the weight....we could all be seeing a more svelte me! Wish me luck!

Here's an update on Emery's timeline we've been keeping:
At 8 1/2 months: You've figured out how to wave to people, although haven't put two and two together what it means. You definitely know your name, Mama, Daddy, Gus, Poppy, Mimi, Nana and Grandpa. You instantly look for them when we talk about them. You're starting some finger foods and still have no luck with sippy cups.

At 9 months: You are now OBSESSED with waving. You wave at anything you see, anytime we say hello or bye bye, or when we point to things. You wave at Gus, the sweeper, the news anchors, cars and anyone watching you. You get up on all fours and rock back and forth singing and still immediately drop to your stomach and swim. You love walking around the house holding our hands, but have to drop everything to wave your arms up and down like a conductor when you hear someone singing a song. Your favorite songs right now are the Winnie the Pooh song, Soul Sister by Train and the Bellybutton Song by Veggie Tales...what a collection! You refuse to eat any meal without trying to spit it out by singing and making motor boat noises. Not cool child. And you're still the most precious thing I've ever laid eyes on.

We're enjoying a rainy, gray day by watching the Food Network and playing with toys. Hope all is well your way.

Out With the Old, In With the New

Surprise! We have a baby. I know it's been forever and then some since we have updated, so I decided that one of my resolutions this year will be to update the blog AT LEAST once a month, more if possible.

So much has happened that I don't know where to start, so I'll just skip over most of it. I saw on a friend's blog that they wrote what new things their child had been doing that week or month. I find it a wonderful way to track what Emery's been up to since I am so bad at staying on top of things.

Emery is now seven months old! Happy seven months to you baby. I have had the time of my life so far and couldn't imagine a single second without you. Being a momma to you is the greatest thing in the world.

Here's what's new in your life:
At 5 1/2 months: You began trying to sit up by yourself and twirl your ankles constantly. This is a trait that never ends. Whether you're eating, laying down to play, throwing a tantrum in your bed, your cankles are going non-stop.
At 6 months: You get upset when we take away a toy you love, you can sit up by yourself with minimal wobbling and you are recognizing your name when we talk to you. You love to squeal as high as you can go and crack yourself up with your noises.
At 6 1/2 months: You wave your arms at people if they wave back at you and are starting to have Momma separation anxiety. You also pick your arms up when you want picked up by someone. You are blowing bubbles and jibber jabbering to yourself when you play.
At 7 months: You definitely have Momma separation anxiety and want me around if you can see me. You are very independent and don't want to take naps very often, wearing me out! You like trying to sip out of our cups, but I don't want you to grow up too fast, so I haven't bought you a sippie cup yet.

I've posted a few pics of us in Mexico for our early Christmas above.

Drew started back to classes again today. Thankfully his schedule gets better each semester, so we see him more and he has time to hang out with us and play with Emery. He'll be done next April and I am counting down the days. I'm even contemplating making a paper chain to countdown...perhaps when we are only down to a year. :)

I've started working full-time again this week. It's been one day and it's been long. We'll see how long I can last working 40 hours and chasing a goofball around. Thankfully she isn't rolling across the floor or crawling yet. It saves me a little bit before everything gets baby-proofed.

Well, she's actually sleeping and hasn't woken up yet wanting to play. So I'm off to bed. Good night!

Practice Run

Much has happened since our last post many weeks ago.  Our nursery is nearly baby ready, Mals belly has continued to grow and we had a practice run to the hospital and got to spend the night.

We finally decided on a crib set and colors for our nursery and purchased the entire furnitire set.  We have the crib and armoire set up and we pick up the combo tomorrow.  It's funny how the unborn baby gets entirely new everything while every single thing in our own room is secondhand.  She's already spoiled.  We decided to entice the family and give them the first letter in the name we have chosen (it's an E) and they are racking their brains to try and figure it out (they never will).  Mal's parents came last weekend to help paint the nursery and a friend of ours is going to paint a mural on the wall that you can't see in the picture next week.

After two weeks of fighting a nasty cough and sore throat, I (Mal) was finally starting to feel a bit better and could semi-swallow. We went to a friend's house for dinner last Friday for homemade pizza and RockBand. Little did we know, that they had the flu, or would be getting it the next day. Saturday night I woke up with a stomach ache and ended up hanging over the toilet the entire night. When I couldn't stop throwing up, I asked Drew to call someone to help so he called the doctor to find out what to do. She recommended heading to the ER to get some fluids since I was probably dehydrated.

When we arrived, I was having some small contractions and was pretty delusional. (Ask Drew). They sent me to the OB to check out the baby and make sure I wasn't going into labor already. After an hour or so on the baby monitor, they said the contractions weren't labor pains and that I just needed fluid. So we traveled back down to the ER through a VERY back way and waited to get a couple bags of fluid through an IV. Three bags later, I was still dehydrated and throwing up so my doctor decided to admit me to the OB to monitor the baby and get me stable enough to go home.

I don't think I've ever felt worse in my life. They had to give me potassium along with pepcid and normal saline solution. I had a complete freak out when they gave me the potassium because it hurt so much going through my veins. I was very glad to find out the next day that it bothers everyone like that and I don't just have a low pain tolerance level! I was getting very nervous for how I would handle labor if I couldn't handle the IV fluid!!

After two days in the ER and OB, they finally thought I was hydrated enough to go home. The rest of this week has been very slow moving for me because I feel like a zombie still and its taken me all week to actually eat a meal! Anyone who knows me, knows this is very unusual.

As you can see in a picture here, I actually threw up so much that I busted many blood vessels in my eyes....making me look very creepy says my family. They look much better than they did in this picture...so be thankful if you didn't see me before this.

The last update we have is a new belly picture. This is at almost 32 weeks!!! Only 59 days to go (or sooner). :) Our first baby shower is next weekend and we are so excited to start getting stuff to fill her room up with!
